Bridges in Slupsk on a photo
“The importance of a river and crossing it were supposed to had had a fundamental significance for thousands of years. Tracks of settlement migrations crossed Slupia River. […] First attempts to cross this river (possibly, a stone path in shallow places of the river) had to be made in the neighbourhood of today's castle and somewhere in the north, near today's Orzeszkowa street. There also had to be a place of crossing the river in the area of the settlement from VIII century, existence of which was proved by documents, that is somewhere near today's St. Otton's church. In XIII century, wooden stone-strenghtened bridges started to appear. In the Middle Ages, the most known bridge was the one situated where the Zamkowy mill is located today, however it was situated more towards the south in the past. In XV and XVI centuries, there were three bridges over the river called the “curved” ones, but in that time the river bed of Slupia River run differently than today. Bridges had crucial role in developing the town's area – they had a town-developing role, they „attracted” buildings, they activated area's functions. They were arteries of Slupsk since they decided on the traffic of inhabitants, visitors, armies, goods, money. Their number has never been enough. In the interwar period, Slupsk had the greatest number of bridges (9) and, if they remained up to this day, traffic in the town would be differently distributed. However, no new bridges have been built since the end of XIX century, and, after the Second World War, only the most important ones were rebuilt – those having a strategic role for the town”.
