City development and educational system in Slupsk
In 1654 in Slupsk the Post Office was built. In 1780 cash of Credit Earth's was formed - the institution, which gave long loans on profitable rules to owners of large agricultural fortunes. In 1769 Marine Society was built. In 1794-98 new Town Hall was built, in 1799 Excise Office and in 1803 elementary school. The classicistic building of post road office originates from the beginning of 19th century which is found on Starzynski Street with its characteristic half-timbered wall. The four-class masculine Latin school receded into the background after the Thirty Year War. There were missing some good teachers and those who worked at that time often left from low gratifications. In 1722 programmatic and methodical reforms were made in this school being modeled on the University of Halle. The school regained its prestige. More and more pupils started to attend the school and in 1730 fifth class was formed and also the fifth teacher was employed.
It was a very difficult time for the school for children from poor families. In 1730 there were only 36 pupils at that school. The situation got better when school passed under care of town council. The city council donated the church of St. Nicholas to that school in 1731. In 1708-1710 the elementary school for girls in the New City was opened. Except of the catechism, bases of writing and reading were taught. A lot of time was devoted to learning of practical skills: sewings, crochettings and weavings. In 1769 the king of Prussian, Frederic II came to a decision about opening marine societies in Slupsk. The development plans of the Prussian army (after the Seven Years War) demanded large and well - trained officer's cadre. Cadets of Slupsk school, after seven or eight years of learning were directed to higher degree of Berlin military college where they received officer's graduate.

The system was abolished in 1906 with concerning of the public maintenance act of primary schools. In the second half of this century there were two primary schools in Slupsk; municipal sixteen-classes school and five-classes free school. The first school ensured full education of elementary and basic degree. It made possible continuation of learning in colleges. The second free school offered learning in shortened elementary four years' system.
In 1896 (reform of education) the division on free and municipal schools was abolished. On today's Deotymy Street Latin school was found. The second one was formed in 1897 on today's Henry's Pobozny Street and the third one in 1905 on Mickiewicz Street. The only one school of junior high school status (from 1858), was situated on today's Szarych Szeregow Street. The separate secondary school for girls got new building on Niedzialkowski Street in 1882. In 1895 after upbuilding, the name of school was changed into higher girls' middle school. Vocational education also was changed. Built in 1871 school of crafts was renamed into three-year vocational evening school (1905). Small merchant school got under supervision of Chamber Of Trade in 1905 and was called merchant school of supplementing education.
