The economy in the Slupsk area has been heavily dependent on its marine character for many centuries. Seaside towns of Middle Pomerania, such as Darlowo, Jaroslawiec, Ustka, Rowy and Leba, have always had strong associations with sea fishing and fish processing industry which today decide on the area's development direction, too. Fish's Day in Slupsk is a holy day of Polish sea and inland fishermen as well as fish processing industry companies. The first Fish's Day ever took part on 14th September 1997.

It was held under patronage of Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Maritime Economy, Marshal of Pomorskie Voivodeship and Governor of Pomorskie Voivodeship. A discussion forum that started the event raised problems of fishing economy once Poland joined the European Union and a new planning period for years 2007-2013.

Over 20 fishing industry companies had their stands, contests for the best exhibition stands and fish products were organized. During the first day, shows for children were provided, the DKD comedy group had their performance on a special stage and, in the afternoon, another Sea Shanties' Festival in Slupsk took place. The Saturday evening ended with the fireworks show in Jerzy Waldorff's Park. On the Labedzi Pond in Slupsk, VIP's fishing contest was organized. On the second day, the main music event took place.

The main organizers of Fish's Day in Slupsk were the President of the City of Slupsk and chief executive of the Slupsk district. Technical support was given by the National Fishing Office in Ustka, Polish Association of Fishing Processing Industry in Koszalin, Regional Board of Polish Association of Fishing in Slupsk, Association of Sea Cities and Municipalities as well as scientists from Sea Fisheries Institute in Gdynia and University of Agriculture in Olsztyn and Szczecin.
