Slupsk plants
Jerzy Waldorff's ParkSlupsk parks and squares were being developed for over a century. Its basic framework, that is today's Sienkiewicza Avenue and a park located between Jagielly and Jana Pawla II Streets, was designed already in the 19th century. Plants were green areas established in place of old fortifications surrounding the medieval town. Another squares and town greens appeared separately in place and time. A design of current Sienkiewicza Avenue told that a town green would replace existing marshy meadows and a pond and in 1882 they began greening works. A natural extension to Sienkiewicza Avenue is Pierwszych Slupszczan Square situated between Stefana Starzynskiego and Anny Lajming Streets.
Another part of the plants is a park between Wladysława Jagielly and Jana Pawla II Streets – now known as Jerzego Waldorffa Park. The south edge of this area, called the hill Jagniece (eng. Lamb Hill) in the 19th century, was levelled and planted with trees in 1849. Later, a rose garden was established and, in 1912, Gothic-style St George's Hospital Chapel was put up there. Now, you will find Blogosławionego Bronisława Kostkowskiego Square in that place. From a side of the Pomeranian Dukes' Castle, the plants link with a little green band – remains of a castle garden established by duchess Erdmuta at the beginning of the 17th century.
A square next to Juliana Tuwima StreetSince from the east side medieval Slupsk was surrounded by a wall with wall towers and the Slupia River, there was no place for defence ramparts nor bastions. That is why green areas were developed another way. Until the Second World War, it was a typical built-up area. At Rybacki Square, at the corner of Mostnika and Francesco Nullo Streets, you could find large half-timbered warehouses. There were also some extensions to medieval walls and a narrow picturesque street running along (up to the Premonstratensian convent behind St Nicolaus' Church). The river banks were a place for fishing harbours and small footbridges. Between 1960 and 1970, the whole area was turned into a footpath. In 1997, a river boulevard got a name after priest Jerzy Popieluszko.
North and South Forests
The flower clockThe development of vast town green areas is a result of a design and work of Slupsk bookseller Karl Schrader (1843÷1923). He is the one who made councillors establish parks and greens and surround Slupsk peripheries with green fences: North and South Forests - this is how city recreational lands, a favourite place for weekend leisure and walking of Slupsk residents, were brought to life. As a tribute to Schrader's merits, a park established at the beginning of the 20th century was named after him – today it is known as Powstancow Warszawy Square.
